GENERAL INFORMATION
CAREERS EDUCATION AND GUIDANCE
The Careers Education and Guidance Programme at Silverdale School is built on three aims or expectations as follows: -
SELF DEVELOPMENT - Understand yourself and be aware of the influences around you.
CAREER EXPLORATION - Investigate opportunities in learning and work
CAREER MANAGEMENT - Make and adjust plans to manage change and transition.
Silverdale staff work together with the other providers to help pupils meet these goals by providing a co-ordinated programme of Careers Education and Guidance that supports the schools mission statement and Equal Opportunities Policy which emphasising that “Every individual has potential and is, therefore capable of achievement”. The School opens opportunities to all and makes no assumptions based on gender, nationality, race, ability, disability or creed.
Silverdale School holds the Sheffield Standard for Careers Education and Guidance.
As a fully comprehensive school Silverdale caters for the individual needs of all its students enabling them to participate as fully as is practicable in the educational experience of mainstream secondary school. The school curriculum is always under review and changes may occur after thorough debate and approval by the Governors. More detailed policy documents on aspects of the Curriculum (such as Sex Education) are available on request.
ASSEMBLIES AND RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
The Religious Education course is designed to allow all pupils in a multi-faith school to consider the spiritual aspect of life and to promote greater understanding between people of different beliefs and cultures. The Religious Education programme complies with Sheffield’s locally agreed syllabus.
Assemblies are held on a whole-year basis and address moral and spiritual matters usually related to a current issue and are broadly Christian in character.
It is, of course, a parent’s right to withdraw a child from Religious Education and Assemblies, although we feel this would deprive your son/daughter of genuine educational experiences. Any requests should be made in writing to the Headteacher.
CHARGING AND REMISSIONS POLICY
Where activities take place in school session times, parents will be invited to make voluntary contributions towards the cost of the activity but a pupil will not be debarred from taking part in that activity because his/her parents cannot, or will not, contribute.
Where activities take place out of school session time, a charge will continue to be levied, where appropriate.
Appropriate charges will be made for ingredients and materials where parents have indicated in advance that they wish to own their child’s finished work.
Any application for a full or partial remission of charges will be considered by the Headteacher.
Parents will be required to meet the cost of breakages and damage where this is a result of their child’s unreasonable behaviour.

Admissions
Special procedures exist for appeals against decisions relating to schools admissions and the production of statements of special educational needs. Information about these procedures is given to parents by the LA when they are informed of the decision affecting their son or daughter.
Exclusions
If your son or daughter is excluded from the school for disciplinary reasons, you will be given information about the procedures for complaint or appeal at the time you are informed of the exclusion by the school. If you are in doubt, please contact the school or the Complaints Officer of the Local Authority.
Other Complaints
All other complaints should be made initially to the Headteacher. Matters which cannot be resolved in this way can be referred to the Chair of Governors. A copy of the school’s complaints procedure is enclosed with this prospectus.
If a resolution is still not reached, you have the right to complain formally to the Local Authority at the address below:
