Silverdale School > Sixth Form > Sixth Form Prospectus

Silverdale has an Open Sixth Form offering one and two year courses to students who wish to extend their study beyond Year 11.  The Sixth Form admits between 120 – 150 each year of whom 95% go on to University Degree courses.  In addition to choosing from a comprehensive range of A and AS courses, Sixth Formers may also take a subject at High Storrs, King Ecgberts or Sheffield College.  Silverdale Sixth Form is managed by the Head of Post 16 Education and the Key Stage 5 Leader who lead a team of experienced Sixth Form Tutors.

A Silverdale Sixth Former can expect :

  • Expert tuition in a wide range of ‘A’ level subjects by highly qualified teachers who have an outstanding success record.
  • Complementary A/S and vocational courses to enhance or support ‘A’ level study.
  • An enrichment programme incorporating General Studies, The Youth Award Scheme (Gold), Work Experience and Work Shadowing, Community Service and a range of recreational opportunities.
  • A full programme of individual guidance running from Spring Term in Year 11 to a post ‘A’ level results service during August and September.
  • Personal mentoring by a senior member of staff through the University Entrance process (UCAS), further support by the Sheffield Careers Service.
  • Opportunities for personal development through service to the School and the community.
  • Companionship and support of fellow students in the consortium of Sixth Form Schools.

Enrichment Activities

Duke of Edinburgh :

This offers a unique challenge to offer a wide range of skills. This is a nationally recognised scheme.  We offer the Gold award over Year 12 and Year 13.  It involves a wide range of requirements from the expedition, voluntary service, physical recreation, skill development and residential project.  Students play a key role in the planning and organisation and find the whole experience tremendously rewarding.

Community Sports Leader Awards :

This is a nationwide initiative which aims to produce motivated and confident people who can lead safe, purposeful and enjoyable recreational activities.  At Silverdale students follow a course which involves amongst other things pupils from feeder schools participating in activities organised by our Sixth Formers, as well as participation in an accredited First Aid training programme.

 Work Experience / Volunteering :

Opportunities exist for all students who want work experience to negotiate placements that take place on Wednesday afternoons regularly or on a block placement.  Work shadowing is different from Year 10/Year 11 experiences as it is directly related to career aspirations.

We also have links with the University of Sheffield which provide special programmes in dentistry, medicine, accountancy, architecture and law.  Students on the Aim Higher cohort are eligible to apply for these.

Mandarin Chinese  :

A taster course taught by a qualified native Chinese teacher, focussing on language and culture.  Access to multimedia laboratory with teacher support for students already learning a language, and for students wanting to maintain their language skills.

European Links :

A wonderful opportunity to meet and exchange European initiatives and joint ventures integrated into our learning and teaching.  Our European Partners have complemented the work of our Art Department and Design & Technology Department.

Tutorial & PSHE Programme :

Your timetable will be completed by the Tutorial & PSHE programme.  A combination of assemblies, visiting speakers, work with your tutor as a group and time for individual discussion will support you during your two years in the Sixth Form. Our aim is to help you prepare for important choices which lie ahead and to give you the opportunity to think about, and discuss wider issues which affect you both now and in the future.
