Mathematics
Awarding Body : Edexcel.
Entry Requirements : Grade B in GCSE Mathematics. (Students aiming for Grade A* at GCSE should also consider following the Further Mathematics course. This leads to an A level in Mathematics and an A Level in Further Mathematics for approximately one and a half times the commitment of the usual Mathematics course).
Course Content : The course comprises 4 compulsory Pure Maths modules and 2 optional applied maths modules chosen from either Mechanics, Statistics or Decision Maths.
The Pure Modules further develop the GCSE topics of algebra, functions, graphs and trigonometry, and introduce new topics such as exponentials and calculus.
The applied maths options are very flexible and generally reflect the groups other option choices, for example Physics students usually follow the Mechanics options.
Assessment : All modules are tested in 1 ½ hour written papers. In some modules a graphic calculator may be used but the first core module is a non-calculator paper.
