Further Mathematics

Awarding Body :  Edexcel.

Entry Requirements :  Students require a grade A or A* in GCSE Mathematics.

Course Content :  Students study 12 modules, 6 contribute towards A2 Mathematics A Level, 6 contribute towards A2 Further Maths (or 3 for AS).

The additional modules are 2 extra Pure Maths modules and 4 extra applied Maths modules, in recent years these have been a combination of Statistics and Mechanics although other options are available (including Decision Maths) to suit particular circumstances.

A number of students choose to follow the Further Maths course to AS. This allows them to develop their Pure Mathematics and further their study of a particular branch of applied Mathematics without being too heavy a commitment over the 2 years.

Assessment :  Examinations are in January and June of Years 12 and 13, usually 3 in each sitting.  There is a great deal of flexibility but again in recent years the structure has been as follows :

January Y12 :   Core 1, Mechanics 1, Statistics 1
June Y12 : Core 2, Core 3, Mechanics 2
January Y13 : Core 4, Further Pure 1, Statistics 2
June Y13 : Further Pure 2, Statistics 3, Mechanics 3

Coursework :  None.

Progression :  Further Maths is very useful for anyone wishing to study a Mathematics related degree particularly Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Engineering.  The increased Statistical element also makes it very useful for any further study where data analysis is required.
