Entry Requirements : Grade B in GCSE Biology or Additional Science GCSE
(GCSE Additional Applied Science is not sufficient).
Course Content :
Year 1 : Biology and Disease (digestive and gas exchange systems, linked diseases, biological molecules, cells and cell transport, enzymes). The Variety of Living Organisms. Practical investigations and data interpretation.
Year 2 : Populations and Environment. Control in Cells and in Organisms (nervous and endocrine systems, homeostasis and genetics). Applying biological principles. Practical investigation and How Science Works.
Assessment :
Examinations take place in January and June in the first year of study leading to the AS qualification. The remaining modules will be examined in January and June of the second year of study leading to the full A level qualification.
Coursework : Investigative Skills Assessment and Practical Skills Assessment
Assessments are based upon practical investigations, one unit in each year. Assessment is by AQA set tasks, including a written paper.
Activities outside of Lessons
Following the June AS examinations a three day residential field trip to Wales is organised to support the environment theory required in the second year of the course.
