Art and Design

Awarding Body: AQA

Entry Requirements : Grade C or above in GCSE Art & Design.

Course Content :

Year 1 :
One coursework project and one controlled test project at the end of the year.  Students are entered for the Fine Art option.
Year 2 :
One coursework project, which includes a written journal of 1000 words, and one controlled test project.

Assessment :

Students are expected to produce one study each treble and double lesson, plus a study for homework a week.  This individual work will be assessed regularly to inform the students of their progress and give them the opportunity to make the necessary improvements before the objective is formally assessed at the end of each objective. There are four assessment objectives for every project.  All students are assessed at the end of the first year of study leading to the AS qualification.  The remaining 2 modules are assessed during the second year leading to the full A level qualification.

Coursework :

There is one coursework project in the first year called the ‘Portfolio Project’. This starts from the student’s own interest and begins with a Proposal that the student then starts researching with relevant artists, cultures, craftspeople, photographers and designers. We demonstrate techniques using a broad variety of art, craft and ICT processes and the student explores their own interest to the highest level with teacher support and direction. We are proud that the projects are entirely personalised and that the students are given the opportunity to develop their creativity in the direction that most suits them. There are opportunities to research in local galleries and every two years there is an art trip to a major international city. For the last ten years this has been New York.

 Progression :

Direct entry to art, design or architecture degree courses.  Suitable preparation for art foundation college courses.  This subject also provides a valid certificate and UCAS points for most academic degree courses.
