Language College 

 

A Whole School Appoach 

Developments in the Languages Department

  • The school has acquired a new multimedia laboratory.

  • KS3 & KS4 pupils are benefiting from more support in MFL lessons, more speaking practice with Foreign Language Assistants and enhanced teaching through ICT technology.

  • Close have been established between Silverdale and all primary feeder schools via the teaching of MFL – the working process can be used as a model for other Departments to develop links.

  • Links are also being developed between Silverdale and partner secondary schools.

 Enterprise

The Language college aims at facilitating links with the business community in order to benefit the whole school:

  •  Work experience
  •  Use of languages at work
  •   Business visits
  •  Business speakers.

Diversity

  • The Language College is currently providing extra curricular lessons in Arabic Manderin Chinese at school and Somali classes in the community.

  • The Language College is encouraging pupils to get accreditation for their proficiency in their mother tongue.

 

 

International Dimension

  • The Language College is committed to helping pupils and staff share and publicize any international event in which they are taking part through assemblies, Newsletters and displays and the organisation of International Activity Days.

  • Administrative support is available for international links and visits.

  • The Language College aims at developing international links with a number of countries in order to enhance the Learning and Teaching within the school. 

  • Established links are:

  •  Via the Comenius Project run by Graeme MacDonald
  • Via the Languages Department
  •   South Africa
  •  China
  •  Malaysia

 

The following Departments are already actively involved in some form of international work:

French – German – Spanish – Geography – PSHE – D&T – Sociology – Business & Economics – Art – English – PE.

  • Spanish, French and German Assistants are available in school for first hand knowledge on their country of origin.

  • Pupils in the 6th form, in Y10 and in Y11 have been given access to Mandarin Chinese lessons.
