Curriculum

KS3

The three year course develops every pupil’s creative ability, skills, confidence and critical understanding across a broad range of experiences. In year 7 all the pupils will cover the basic foundations of drawing, painting, 3D, craft, printing and critical understanding. They will build on this in year 8 to create sustained projects which exercise their skills, processes and understanding. During year 9 the pupils will demonstrate their independence and confidence by controlling the content and direction of their projects while at the same time producing high quality art work. This prepares them for the GCSE art course.

KS4

All three of the art teachers are experienced specialists in their art and are committed to sharing their knowledge and passion with the students. At KS4 students opt to study either GCSE Fine art or Photography. Both courses evolve from the Y9 experience as the students create their own individual projects which enable them to explore personal strengths and interests. The assessment objectives are also very similar to the assessment objectives in KS3 which ensures that the transition is smooth. Students have the opportunity to develop their understanding of a broad range of artistic experiences in the fine arts, craft, film, photography, animation and printing. Regular individual assessment informs the students of their attainment and work is monitored using target grades as a guide to ensure that progress is made. The value of a direct experience of art, craft and design is understood and the students are encouraged to visit galleries, museums and workshops to broaden their understanding and enrich their experience of the arts. The coursework component includes two self directed projects which is worth 60% of the final GCSE score and the External Assignment is a project which evolves from a list of starting points issued by the exam board.

KS5

At this stage the students from Silverdale are very comfortable with the independence that is offered to them. They develop more thorough projects with greater depth and understanding which is monitored with regular assessment in line with the appropriate target grades. Students who join the department from other schools quickly learn how to manage their own projects and achieve individual understanding of progress with regular formal assessment. The teaching supports individual ideas and strengths whilst also pushing for confidence using a broad range of processes and materials. Students are expected to produce two studies a week in the lessons and one for homework every week to maintain standards and achieve their target grade. There are more opportunities for visits to museums and galleries to enrich the critical understanding and every two years there is an Arts trip to an International city to research the culture and inform project work. Student work is also exhibited in local and National exhibitions, which includes the ‘National Schools art Exhibition’ in London. There are also good contacts with the local universities to support students with progression into higher education. The first AS level year includes a student directed ‘Portfolio’ project and an exam board external assignment project each worth 50% of the marks. The second A2 year starts with a student directed ‘Journal’ project which includes a 1000 word journal and an exam board external assignment which are worth 25% each to make the complete two year A2 level course.
