About Mathematics

Mathematics is taught by ten subject specialists, all of whom are committed to quality teaching through investigative and exploratory approaches wherever possible. Project work, challenges and games are also used to create a wide variety of approaches to lessons.

We have a range of resources available, many different types of text, worksheets and teacher lead activities which all contribute to our overall aim of delivering a high quality Mathematics curriculum in a varied and engaging manner. Many topics are further enhanced by the use of interactive whiteboards and laptops for pupil use.

We are proud of the high levels of numeracy our students achieve and believe this underpins the academic success of the students. Mathematics is a popular subject at A level where we also have a very strong interest in Further Mathematics.

Curriculum

KS3

Pupils are taught in ability groups throughout KS3.  All follow the National strategy. Our emphasis is on enjoying Mathematics through a varied curriculum whilst ensuring all basic number, algebra, shape and statistical skills are thoroughly addressed. Pupils are assessed each half term and set changes take place as appropriate.

KS4

Exam Board Edexcel : Pupils are set in four ability groups at KS4 with all groups having the opportunity to study for at least grade C at GCSE. The emphasis again is on Engaging Teaching and Learning activities.  Pupils are monitored very closely with many internal assessment points built into the scheme of work. Resources in class vary but are heavily influenced by the SMP Interact Series of texts and resources. There is no coursework element to the course, all external assessment being done at the end of Year 11 with 2 exam papers, a non-calculator and a calculator paper.

KS5

Exam Board Edexcel : Six modules are studied for the full A level (3 for AS). These modules include four compulsory modules in Core maths and two optional modules from Statistics, Mechanics or Decision Maths . Further Maths is also popular, this leads to an additional A level and is very useful for pupils who wish to study Mathematics related degrees or Engineering at University.

Homework

Homework is set each week. Most pupils have dedicated homework books from which to work, although other resources are used as well. All pupils are expected to complete all homework and we happily give any extra support needed for pupils to achieve this.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The Maths Puzzle of the Week has a lot of interest across all key stages.

KS3, 4 and 5 pupils are selected to represent the school at the Sheffield Hallam University Maths Pop Quiz each March.  We also regularly take part in the Maths Challenge and Maths Team Challenge events.
