Building on the established reputation of the business since 1964, HLM provides a full range of design and masterplanning services from its six offices in London, Guildford, Sheffield, Glasgow, Belfast and Cardiff supporting clients and projects throughout the UK in most sectors of the built environment.
HLM is a creatively focused organisation which operates with the belief that good design and architecture enhances the quality of life and environment for current and future generations. We recognise the importance of design quality, sustainability and innovation, and projects are driven by this in pursuit of overall design excellence.
Our design process is centred on our Clients’ operational needs, and we are committed to providing the highest levels of service and advice, and delivering high quality and elegant design solutions. We are proud of the close relationships that we have developed with our clients, and the extent of repeat work that has resulted from the success of adopting this philosophy.
A key driver in our success, we believe, is our teamwork ethos, an ability to address the key project issues, and maximise value on projects for the benefit of our Clients.
HLM identified the BSF Programme as a key element in our future business plan. We have supported many of the government initiatives and spoken at the conferences, and been involved with full BSF bids at Lancashire, Leeds, Tameside, Salford, Somerset and Durham.
Our approach to BSF moves away from the traditional school response to one of transformational and flexible design. Our designs have moved away from the idea of discrete elements providing separate functions linked by circulation. Instead spaces are contained in a “loose fit” building for fully flexible use now and in the future. Passive supervision, flexibility, adaptability and extendibility, appearance and inspirational design, together with a true sustainable solution are inherent in our approach.
In addition HLM uses its school design expertise from across the practice as architectural technical advisors presently working directly with the Local Education Authorities at London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Hull, both major BSF projects.
HLM won the award for ‘Best PFI Operational Project’ for Barnsley Schools in 2008 and were a finalist for the Building Design ‘Education Architect of the Year’ award at the end of 2006. We were also honoured to receive the RIBA White Rose Annual Award for our project for Wakefield Girls High School and the RIBA Midlands Award for Welbeck College in Loughborough.
Our Mission
We believe that architecture is important to everyone. The built environment shapes our experiences and influences the quality of our daily lives. Our aim is to create the highest quality built form and environment conditions to enable us to live, work and play to our full potential.
Our design process takes a holistic approach which incorporates parallel processes of 'outwards in' and 'inwards out'. This is reflected in the range of integrated design services we provide. Our environmental design approach recognises that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts, and that good design can seek to resolve the contradictory forces which shape our surroundings.
We have the humility to listen, analyse, offer and deliver the most innovative sustainable design solutions to meet the needs of our clients and stakeholders, whilst maintaining the best working atmosphere for our team.
Our clients return to us because they know we understand them and can realise their vision.
